Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn: What Your Anger Is Really Trying to Do
Your anger isn’t a character flaw. It’s a survival system — and understanding how it works is the first step toward changing it.
At some point, most people who struggle with anger have asked themselves the same question: why did I react like that?
The situation didn’t warrant it. The other person didn’t deserve it. You knew, somewhere in the middle of it, that you were overreacting. And still, it happened.
That gap — between knowing and doing, between who you want to be and how you actually responded — is one of the things I hear most from the adults I work with in New York City. Smart, self-aware people who are genuinely confused by their own anger. Not because they lack insight, but because they’re working against a very old, very fast biological system.
That system has a name. Most people know part of it as “fight-or-flight.” The fuller picture is more useful than that shorthand suggests.
The alarm system in your brain
Deep inside your brain sits a small structure called the amygdala. Its job is to scan your environment for threat — continuously, automatically, below the level of your conscious awareness.
When it detects something it reads as dangerous — a sharp tone, a look of contempt, a situation that resembles something that hurt you before — it fires. Fast. The signal goes out before your thinking brain has had a chance to weigh in.
That’s not a flaw. For most of human history, the threat was a predator. Stopping to think it through was fatal. Speed was survival.
What fires next is your autonomic nervous system, preparing your body for whichever response the amygdala has already decided you need.
What happens to the thinking brain
The prefrontal cortex — the region directly behind your forehead — handles reasoning, perspective-taking, consequences, and impulse regulation. Under acute threat, its ability to moderate the amygdala’s alarm becomes less effective. Neuroimaging research consistently shows heightened amygdala activation and reduced prefrontal activity during threat states.
This is why anger so often feels like it comes out of nowhere. It didn’t come from nowhere. It came from a rapid-fire sequence of threat detection and bodily activation that happened before the thinking brain got the message.
And it’s why you can know, in the abstract, that you don’t want to react this way — and still react this way. Knowledge lives in the prefrontal cortex. The anger response is upstream of it.
THE FOUR SURVIVAL RESPONSES:
Once the alarm fires, your nervous system selects a response — not deliberately, not consciously, but based on a fast threat calculation about what’s happening and what options are available.
Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn are the brain’s four survival strategies. Each one reflects a different answer to that calculation. And each one can look very different from what you might expect.
Fight: confront the threat
The fight response mobilizes you to overcome the danger. Adrenaline floods the system, heart rate rises, muscles engage, attention narrows. In anger, fight is the most recognizable response — but it doesn’t always look explosive.
It can show up as:
• A raised voice or sharp tone
• Persistent irritability or a short fuse
• Defensiveness, the need to have the last word, or the urge to control
• Anger that feels righteous — because the threat felt real and unjust
Fight is protective. It doesn’t mean you’re aggressive by nature. It means your brain assessed a threat and concluded that confrontation was the best available response.
Flight: escape the threat
The same sympathetic activation as fight, but directed toward getting away rather than engaging.
In emotional life, flight often looks less like running and more like:
• Withdrawing from conflict before it can start
• Staying relentlessly busy to avoid sitting with difficult feelings
• Anxiety — the constant scanning for what might go wrong, preparing the escape route before it’s needed
• Suppressing anger because expressing it feels too dangerous — and watching it accumulate instead
Freeze: become invisible to the threat
When fighting or fleeing isn’t viable, the nervous system can shift into immobilization. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory describes this as dorsal vagal shutdown: heart rate drops, breathing slows, the body goes still. In the animal world, this is playing dead. In human experience, it can feel like going blank, dissociating, or being unable to speak.
In anger, freeze can look like:
• Shutting down completely during conflict — unable to respond even when you want to
• Going numb when emotions run high
• Anger that gets swallowed — stored in the body as tension, headaches, or fatigue
Many people cycle between fight and freeze without recognizing that both are expressions of the same underlying threat response.
Fawn: appease the threat
The fawn response involves suppressing your own needs and reactions to manage or appease the threatening person — compliance as a survival strategy. It’s the nervous system’s calculation that the safest path is making the threat go away by giving it what it wants.
It can show up as:
• People-pleasing that doesn’t feel like a choice
• Automatic apology or self-blame when conflict arises
• Difficulty saying no, even when you want to
• Prioritizing others’ emotional states over your own
• Anger that’s never acknowledged — rerouted into resentment instead
Like the other responses, fawn isn’t a character trait. It’s a learned survival strategy — one that often persists long after the original threat is gone. (It was identified by therapist Pete Walker in his work on complex trauma and has since been integrated into trauma-informed clinical frameworks.)
HOW THIS CONNECTS TO YOUR ANGER:
Anger isn’t just an emotion. It’s a threat response.
Research supports a framework in which anger is the downstream output of a brain that has assessed a situation as threatening, unjust, or blocking a goal — and concluded that the threat is active and confrontable. Anger is the mobilization energy for the fight response.
Which means that understanding your anger is really understanding your threat-assessment system. The useful questions become:
• What did my brain read as a threat in that moment?
• Was the threat real, or was it a pattern from the past?
• Was my response proportionate to the actual danger?
• What was my nervous system trying to protect?
That reframe changes things. The question shifts from “Why am I like this?” to “What has my system been trained to see as dangerous — and is that training still accurate?”
Anger in the body
Because anger is a physiological state, it lives in the body before it shows up in behavior. Common early signals:
• Tight jaw, clenched teeth, or a tense neck and shoulders
• A feeling of heat in the chest or face
• Shallow, fast breathing
• Restlessness, difficulty staying still
• Narrowed focus — tunnel vision on the perceived threat
These physical changes happen first. The behavioral response — the raised voice, the sharp word, the withdrawal — comes after. That means there’s a brief window between your body’s alarm signal and your behavioral response. Learning to use that window is a significant part of what anger therapy is about.
For people carrying chronic, simmering anger, the body is often already partially activated before anything happens. The threshold for the next reaction is lower, the window is shorter, and the prefrontal cortex’s ability to moderate the alarm is further reduced — which is the physiological explanation for why simmering anger can suddenly break through in ways that feel wildly disproportionate to the moment.
A NOTE ON ANXIETY - THEY SHARE THE SAME NERVOUS SYSTEM:
Anxiety and anger are often treated as separate problems. In the human central nervous system, they're not.
Both are threat responses. Both originate in the same amygdala-driven alarm system located in the “mid-brain” or “lizard brain.” Both involve the same autonomic activation — the same adrenaline, the same elevated heart rate, the same narrowing of attention.
The difference is mostly in what happens next. Anxiety tends to activate the flight response: the system reads the threat as something to escape, avoid, or prepare against. Anger tends to activate the fight response: the threat is read as something to confront, overcome, or push back against.
But the underlying activation is the same. Which is why anxiety and anger so frequently travel together — and why one so reliably primes the other.
A person who has been anxious all day — scanning, bracing, managing — is already running at an elevated baseline when they sit down to dinner. The threat-detection system is sensitized. The threshold for anger is lower. The window between trigger and reaction is shorter. What might otherwise land as a minor irritation registers instead as a threat worth fighting.
This is one of the reasons I often work on anxiety and anger together, rather than treating them as separate issues. They share the same root system. And understanding that can make both more workable.
WHAT CHANGES THROUGH THERAPY
The goal isn’t to stop ever feeling threatened. That’s neither realistic nor the point. The goal is a more accurate threat-assessment system — one that responds to what’s actually happening rather than to a threat library built under old circumstances.
In my Anger Therapy practice, I help clients learn how to be more skilled owner-operators of their own nervous systems.
In practice, that means:
• Using the body as an early warning system. Noticing the jaw tightening, the shoulders rising, the breathing changing — before the reaction becomes behavior. The body signals the alarm well before the behavioral expression.
• Recognizing your dominant response. Fighter, flighter, freezer, fawner — or some combination. Each pattern has its own path, and knowing yours changes how you work on it.
• Building prefrontal capacity. Deliberate breathing, pausing, cognitive reframing — these all work, neurologically, by engaging the prefrontal cortex and creating the moderating input that the amygdala’s alarm bypassed.
• Understanding your triggers. What specifically does your amygdala respond to? Sharp tones, perceived disrespect, feeling dismissed, situations that feel unfair? These are usually personal and rooted in history.
• Updating the threat library. Understanding where the patterns came from — what trained your system to see certain things as dangerous — and whether that training still serves you. This is often where the deepest and most lasting change happens.
The nervous system is more adaptable than most people realize. With the right support, it can be recalibrated toward responses that are more proportionate, more considered, and far less costly.
